The Ganges Delta is the largest river delta on Earth.

It is also known as the Bengal Delta or the Sundarbans Delta. This massive landform sits in the Bengal region of the Indian subcontinent. It covers parts of Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal. The delta forms where several river systems meet. The main rivers are the Ganges and the Brahmaputra. These rivers flow into the Bay of Bengal.

Because the soil is so rich, people call it the Green Delta.

Geologically, the delta is a complex and active system. It has an arcuate shape, which means it looks like an arc or a triangle. The land is made of alluvial soil. This soil consists of fine sediment particles. Rivers carry these particles from far away. Some particles are fluvio-glacial, meaning they come from melting glaciers. As river currents slow down near the estuary, these particles settle. This process builds up the land over time. The delta is a labyrinth of channels, lakes, and swamps. It also contains many small river islands called chars.

The delta is divided into two distinct geological sections. The Gorai-Madhumati River acts as the divider. One side is the eastern delta. This part is geologically young and very active. The other side is the western delta. This part is older and less active. The soil types change depending on where you are. Most of the area has nutrient-rich alluvial soil. However, red and red-yellow laterite soils appear as you move east. The delta sits at a major tectonic junction. It is where the Indian, Eurasian, and Burma plates meet. This collision helps supply the massive amount of sediment that builds the delta.

Wildlife in the delta is incredibly diverse. The Sundarbans is the world's largest mangrove ecoregion.

It is made of a chain of 54 islands. These forests are flooded with brackish water during the dry season. During the monsoon, they receive fresh water. The Sundarbans is home to about 1,020 endangered Bengal tigers. Other animals include the Indian elephant, clouded leopard, and crocodiles. You can also find golden jackals along the canals. In the water, two types of dolphins live. The Irrawaddy dolphin comes from the ocean. The Ganges river dolphin is a true river dolphin and is very rare.

Human life on the delta is very dense. About 273.6 million people live in this region.

This includes 173.6 million in Bangladesh and 100 million in West Bengal. The Ganges River Basin supports about 400 million people in total. This makes it the most populous river basin in the world. Most areas have a density greater than 200 people per square kilometer. Agriculture is the main way people survive. Two-thirds of Bangladesh's people work in farming. They grow major crops like rice, jute, and tea.

Fishing is also vital for food and income.

Some people have even increased fish production by 800% through better pond farming.

However, living in the delta brings many environmental risks. The region faces heavy monsoons and melting Himalayan snow. Tropical cyclones from the North Indian Ocean also hit the coast. In November 1970, the Bhola cyclone killed at least 500,000 people. Some estimates suggest the loss of life was even higher. In 1998, massive floods left over 30 million people homeless. Climate change also poses a major threat. Rising sea levels could cause six million people in Bangladesh to lose their homes. These natural events make the delta a very challenging place to inhabit.

History has changed how the delta functions. During the colonial period, the East India Company used permanent levees. These levees helped farming in the short term. However, they stopped the natural flow of sediment. This sediment is needed to raise the land and prevent it from sinking. In the 1960s, large-scale projects built more embankments. These often caused rivers to choke on their own sediment. This led to saltwater entering rice paddies. Today, people use tidal river management to help the land. The Bangladesh government is also working on the Delta Plan 2100. This plan includes building massive concrete dams and new polders to protect the future of the region.
