It forms where the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers meet. These rivers carry water into the Bay of Bengal.

This land is made of many layers of fine soil. Rivers carry small bits of sediment from far away. Some of this soil comes from melting glaciers in the mountains.

As the river water slows down, these particles settle to the bottom. This creates very fertile soil full of nutrients. This is why people call it the Green Delta. The land is a maze of channels, swamps, and lakes. It also has many small islands called chars.

Many different animals call this delta their home. The Sundarbans is the largest mangrove forest in the world.

It is made of a chain of 54 islands. You might see a Bengal tiger living in these forests. There are about 1,020 of these tigers in the Sundarbans. Other animals include crocodiles, elephants, and golden jackals. In the water, you can find two types of dolphins. The Ganges river dolphin is a true river dolphin.

Life on the delta is very busy and crowded. About 273.6 million people live in this region.

Heavy rains and melting snow can also cause big floods. In 1970, a very deadly cyclone hit the area. In 1998, large floods left millions of people homeless. People also worry about the sea levels rising. This is because of changes in the Earth's climate. Scientists and governments work to build dams and levees to help.
