The city is built on the side of a steep hill. You can see the snowy peaks of the Himalayas in the distance. To the west, the huge Mount Kanchenjunga towers over the land. This is the third highest mountain in the whole world. The name Gangtok might mean "hill top" in the local language. It is a place where many different people live together. The population includes the Bhutia, Lepcha, and Indian Gorkha groups.

The city has a mild climate all year. This happens because of its high elevation and sheltered spot. There are five distinct seasons in Gangtok. These are summer, monsoon, autumn, winter, and spring. In the summer, the weather stays mild and warm. The monsoon season brings very heavy rains from June to September. These rains can sometimes cause landslides on the steep slopes. In the winter, the air is cool and crisp. Snow is quite rare in the city. Most of the time, the weather can change very quickly.

Gangtok has a very interesting history. Long ago, it was just a tiny hamlet. In 1716, a small monastery was built there. Later, in 1840, the Enchey Monastery was built. This made the town a popular place for religious trips. In 1894, the ruler named Thutob Namgyal moved the capital to Gangtok. This made the city much more important. For a long time, it was a major stop for traders. They traveled between Lhasa in Tibet and cities in India. This trade used the Nathula and Jelepla mountain passes.

Today, tourism is a huge part of the local economy. Many people work in hotels or run restaurants.

Visitors come to see the beautiful forests and flowers. You can find many types of orchids and bamboo there. People also enjoy trekking and river rafting in the mountains. The city has busy shopping areas like Mahatma Gandhi Marg. Local people also make beautiful handmade paper and crafts. Sikkim is also famous for its organic farming. The state reached a goal to make all its farming organic in 2016.

The geography of the area shapes how people live. Two streams, the Roro Chu and Ranikhola, flow near the town. Most roads in the city are very steep. Because the ground is made of certain rocks, landslides can happen. The city also sits near a place where tectonic plates meet. This means earthquakes can happen in the region. To help with power, the area uses many hydroelectric stations. These stations use moving water to make electricity. This helps provide a steady supply of power to the homes in Gangtok.
