To the west is the Tlawng river valley. To the east lies the Tuirial river valley.

The name Aizawl comes from two Mizo words. The word "ai" means cardamom. The word "zawl" means flatland or plain. This means the name likely means "the field of cardamom." This name might describe how the area looked before the city grew. Long ago, a chief named Lalsavunga founded a village here around 1810. Later, the British used the site for a military post. They called it Fort Aijal.

The fort was formally established on 25 February 1890.

Life in the old fort was often quite difficult. There were very few roads for travel. The Silchar-Aizawl road was 175 km long but was not an all-weather road. People often had to carry supplies by hand. Many different groups of people lived in the area. Khasi people were skilled carpenters. Gurkha soldiers lived in barracks. Punjabi builders worked in the northern end. Bengalis worked in offices like the post office.

The city also became a place for religion. The Welsh Mission Society set up its headquarters there.

As time passed, the small village grew into a large city. In the late 1950s, many people moved there during a famine. By the early 1960s, it had become a modern cityscape. The city faced hard times in March 1966. During an uprising, the Indian government used airstrikes on the area. This was the first time airstrikes were used in urban areas in Indian history. Since then, the city has continued to grow. It is now part of the Smart Cities Mission to improve buildings and paths.

Today, Aizawl is a busy place with about 415,000 people.

The weather is humid and subtropical. Summers are warm, and winters are cool. Most of the rain falls between April and October. The city has many modern parts, like the Lengpui Airport.
