Aizawl is the capital city of the Indian state of Mizoram.

It is also the third largest city in northeast India. The city sits atop a series of mountain ridges. Its average elevation is approximately 1,132 meters above sea level. The local topography is very rugged and features steep slopes. These elevations can range from 60 meters to 1,509 meters. Aizawl is located within the Eastern Himalayan foothills. It is surrounded by lush greenery and sits north of the Tropic of Cancer. To the west lies the Tlawng river valley. To the east lies the Tuirial river valley.

The name Aizawl has a specific meaning in the Mizo language. It combines the word "ai," meaning cardamom, with "zawl," meaning flatland or plain. Therefore, the name roughly translates to "the field of cardamom." This name might describe the area before it became an urban center. Long before the British arrived, a village was founded here. Chief Lalsavunga founded this village around 1810. The site was later abandoned before being rediscovered by the British. The location was strategic because it was near the Li Bial stream. It was also only 14 kilometers from Sairang.

British administration changed the area significantly starting in 1889. Officer Dally of the Assam Police arrived with 400 men to assist troops. Based on his recommendation, Colonel Skinner chose the site for a fortified post. Fort Aijal was formally established on 25 February 1890.

During this era, the city was a diverse place. Khasi people worked as skilled carpenters. Gurkha soldiers lived in barracks. Punjabi builders worked in the northern end of the city. Bengali people served as bureaucrats in offices. Santali people were employed as coolie labour. Even the police force included Assamese members.

Life in early Aizawl was often physically demanding. The communication system was limited because there were very few roads. The Silchar-Aizawl road was 175 km long, but it was not an all-weather road. Because roads were unusable for wheeled transport, people used coolies to lift supplies. The city also became a religious hub. The Welsh Mission Society established its headquarters there. This led to a surge in the population. The Aizawl Bazar became the main commercial center for the Lushai Hills. It was a major market for items like salt, clothes, and soap.

The city grew rapidly through several different stages. In the late 1950s, the Mautam famine caused many people to move to Aizawl. This influx of people helped transform the village into a modern cityscape by the early 1960s. However, the city faced a dark period in March 1966. During the Mizo Independence Movement, the Indian government launched airstrikes on Aizawl.

This was the first time the government used airstrikes in urban areas in Indian history. Later, when Mizoram became a Union Territory in 1972, the city saw more economic growth. Finally, gaining statehood in 1987 brought more funding for infrastructure and healthcare.

Today, Aizawl is a major urban center with an estimated population of 415,000 people.

The city is governed by the Aizawl Municipal Corporation. This group manages urban planning, sanitation, and waste. To ensure fairness, one-third of the elected seats are reserved for women. The population is mostly Christian, making up 93.63 percent of the residents. Hinduism is the second largest religion at 4.14 percent. The city is also known for its environment. In 2024, Aizawl was ranked the second best city in India for air quality. The climate is humid subtropical. Summers are moderately warm, and winters are cool. Most rainfall occurs between April and October.

Aizawl continues to develop through modern initiatives. It is part of the Smart Cities Mission. This program aims to improve urban infrastructure and development. The city features important facilities like the Lengpui Airport.

Because the city has become so crowded, leaders have discussed building a new city. Chief Minister Lalduhoma proposed building a new city in Thenzawl. This new site could hold between 1 million and 1.5 million people. This would help manage the high population density in Aizawl.
