Meghalaya is the wettest state in all of India. Some areas in the southern Khasi Hills get massive amounts of rain every year. The town of Cherrapunji holds a record for the most rain in a single month. Nearby, the village of Mawsynram holds the record for the most rain in a year. This heavy rain feeds many rivers that flow through the hills. These rivers often create deep gorges and tall waterfalls.

Scientists have found sites from the Neolithic period here. This means people lived in the area during ancient times. In the past, different tribes had their own kingdoms. Later, the British ruled the area and called it the "Scotland of the East." Meghalaya became its own official state on 21 January 1972. It was formed by taking parts of the state of Assam.
