The Kingdom of Sikkim was a special land in the Eastern Himalayas. It was a monarchy, which means it was ruled by kings. These kings were called Chogyals from the Namgyal dynasty. The story of the kings began with a legend. A prince named Khye Bumsa lived in Tibet long ago. He was told to travel south to find his fortune. Many years later, his descendant Phuntsog Namgyal became the first Chogyal. Three important lamas consecrated him at a place called Yuksom in 1642. His son, Tensung Namgyal, took over in 1670. He moved the capital city to Rabdentse.

Sikkim faced many hard times during its history. In the mid-18th century, Nepal and Bhutan invaded the land. Sikkim was under their rule for more than 40 years. Between 1775 and 1815, many people moved there. About 180,000 ethnic Nepalis moved from Nepal to Sikkim. Later, Sikkim joined with British India to fight Nepal. This led to the Anglo-Nepalese War.

Rules for the land changed many times over the years. In 1861, the Treaty of Tumlong made Sikkim a British protectorate. This meant the British helped protect the kingdom. Later, the Tibetan government gained influence over Sikkim again. In 1888, the British sent troops to remove Tibetan forces. By 1950, Sikkim became an Indian protectorate instead. The land was always linked to its neighbors.

The kingdom changed forever in 1975. Some people felt the Chogyal was not treating everyone fairly. There were complaints about how Nepali Hindus were treated. In April 1975, the Indian Army moved into Gangtok. A vote was held to decide about the monarchy. Most people voted to end the rule of the kings. A new leader named Kazi Lhendup Dorjee helped Sikkim join India.
