The wider metropolitan area has about 8.5 million people. This makes it the third most populous city in all of India. Because of its many green parks, people call it the "Garden City."

How a city grows can take many different steps. Long ago, people lived in this region around 4000 BCE.

Later, different kingdoms ruled the land one after another. The Western Ganga dynasty held control for a long time. Then, the Chola Empire took over in the early eleventh century. The city grew through many changes in leadership. It even had two separate parts for a while. One part was the old Pete area. The other was a British area called the Cantonment. These two parts finally merged into one city in 1949.

History shows us how the modern city began. In 1537, a ruler named Kempe Gowda I built a mud fort.

One old story says a king named the place after boiled beans. Another idea is that the name comes from a type of tree. Some people think it relates to quartz stones found in the ground. The name "Bangalore" was an English version of the Kannada name. For a long time, people used that English name. However, the government officially changed it back to Bengaluru in 2014. This helped honor the city's true Kannada roots.

Today, Bengaluru is a global leader in many ways.
