Ranchi is the capital city of the Indian state of Jharkhand. It is the largest district in the state when looking at the number of people living there. The city sits on the southern part of the Chota Nagpur plateau. This area is part of the larger Deccan plateau. Ranchi is a hilly place with thick tropical forests nearby. These forests help keep the weather pleasant and moderate. Because of its many waterfalls, people often call it the City of Waterfalls.

Many different stories explain where the name Ranchi comes from. One popular tale involves a British captain named Thomas Wilkinson. He chose a village called Archi to be his headquarters. In the local Nagpuri dialect, Archi means bamboo forest. Others say the name comes from the Mundari word "aranchi." This word can mean a short stick used to drive cattle. Another idea is that it refers to a market held every two weeks. Some people even believe it comes from a local bird called "rici." This is the Mundari name for the black kite.
