Building this city was a very big job. It started in 1908 near a village called Sakchi. A man named Jamshedji Tata had a vision for a great steel city. He wanted to provide many comforts for the people living there. He did not want just simple rows of small houses. Instead, he planned for public places like Dimna Lake and Jubilee Park.

The first steel was made in the plant by 1912. The city was officially named Jamshedpur in 1919. This name was chosen to honor Jamshedji Tata.

History shows that the city played a role in big world events. During World War I, the steel plant supplied materials for military campaigns. The steel went to places like Egypt and East Africa. During World War II, the city was a very important target.

British and American troops were sent to the area to protect it. They built air bases at Chakulia and Kalaikunda. They also made many armored carriers called 'Tatanagars' at the railway workshop. These vehicles helped with the war effort between 1940 and 1944.

Jamshedpur has faced many hard times over the years. There were times of labor strikes and social unrest. In the 1960s and 1970s, the city saw sad moments of communal violence. In the 1990s, crime became a big problem for the city. This even threatened the local industries. However, the police started a crackdown on gangs between 1994 and 1996. This helped crime go down again. The city also helped lead the movement to create the state of Jharkhand. Jamshedpur became part of that new state on 15 November 2000.

Today, the city is known for many different things. People often call it the "Steel City" or "Tatanagar."

It is a very clean place to live. In fact, it has been ranked as one of the cleanest cities in India. It is also one of the fastest-growing cities in the world. The city has many big schools and science institutes. It is a place where many different kinds of people live together.
