The geography of Jamshedpur is defined by water and hills. The city sits at the confluence of two rivers. These are the Subarnarekha and the Kharkai rivers. The Subarnarekha is the principal river of the area. It flows from the west toward the southeast. The Kharkai flows from the south. They meet at a place called Domuhani. These rivers provide the city with drinking water.

The history of the city began with a specific vision. Jamshedji Nusserwanji Tata wanted to build a great steel city. He studied advanced technology in Pittsburgh to prepare. He believed that controlling iron meant controlling gold. In 1904, he hired a geologist named Charles Page Perin. They searched for a site with iron, coal, limestone, and water. After three years of searching, they found the village of Sakchi. This location was on the Chota Nagpur plateau. Construction of the plant and city began in 1908. The first steel ingot was rolled in 1912.

In 1919, Lord Chelmsford officially named the city Jamshedpur. This was done to honor Jamshedji Tata.

Jamshedpur played a role in major global conflicts. During World War I, the steel plant was very busy. It produced 300,000 tonnes of steel for military campaigns. This steel was used in Mesopotamia, Egypt, and East Africa. During World War II, the city became a high-value target. Japan was a potential threat to the region. To protect the city, the British deployed troops. They also built air bases at Chakulia and Kalaikunda.

Workers at the railway workshop produced 4,655 "Tatanagars." These were wheeled armored carriers used in the war. In 1945, Tata Motors was established by purchasing the railway workshop.

The city has faced many periods of social and political tension. In 1948, a large protest in Kharsawan turned violent. This event is sometimes compared to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. In 1958, a violent strike occurred at the Tata Steel plant. This led to looting, arson, and the use of federal troops. The city also saw deadly communal violence in 1964 and 1979. In the 1990s, organized crime and gang wars increased. This crime was so intense it nearly hurt the local industries. However, the police launched a crackdown between 1994 and 1996. This successful effort caused crime to decline. Jamshedpur later became a stronghold for the movement to create Jharkhand. The new state was formed on 15 November 2000.

Today, Jamshedpur is a modern and growing urban center. It is one of the fastest-growing global cities. It was also named one of India's first "smart cities." The city is known for being very clean. Swach Survekshan has consistently ranked it as one of the cleanest cities in India. It also ranks 2nd in India for quality of life.

The city is unique because it lacks a municipal corporation. Instead, its basic facilities are managed by a private company. This is the only city in India with this setup. The city features wide roads and many shady trees. It also has reliable, 24-hour electricity.

Many large institutes operate here, such as the National Institute of Technology.

Jamshedpur remains a vital part of the Indian economy. Tata Steel is the largest private steel company in the country. It produces 11 million tons of steel. The city is also a popular place for tourists. Visitors come to see the ancient temples and the forests. They also enjoy public spaces like Dimna Lake and Jubilee Park. On Founder's Day, which is 3 March, Jubilee Park is decorated with lights. This celebrates the legacy of Jamshedji Tata and his vision for a planned city.
