Geographically, the city is bounded by several districts. Dhanbad and Purulia lie to the east. Ramgarh and Hazaribagh are to the west. Giridih sits to the north, and Ranchi is to the south. This location makes it a vital hub within the North Chotanagpur Division.

The city's development is driven by its massive industrial resources. The region contains significant Coal Bed Methane (CBM) reserves. These gas reserves total approximately 45 billion cubic meters.

Additionally, the area is surrounded by important coalfields. These include Jharia, Kulti, West Bokaro, East Bokaro, and Ramgarh. The East Bokaro Coalfield is located specifically in the Bermo-Phusro area. These natural resources provide the energy and materials needed for heavy industry. This geological wealth supports a wide range of large-scale manufacturing operations.

Bokaro is famous for being one of India's first planned cities.

The modern city began to take shape in the late 1960s. This growth was led by the establishment of the Bokaro Steel Plant. The first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, helped lead this initiative. The plant was built through a collaboration with the Soviet Union. The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) operates the facility. In the 2010–2011 period, the plant expanded its capacity. It grew from 4.5 million metric tons to 7.5 million metric tonnes.

This expansion cemented the city's role as a steel-producing powerhouse.

The city's layout follows a very organized structure. It is divided into various sectors to manage growth. Each sector contains specific areas for different needs. There are residential areas for housing and commercial areas for business. These sectors also include shopping centers, playgrounds, and health centers. The city features wide avenues to help movement. This planning helps manage a large and growing population. As the city expands, a new metropolitan area called Greater Bokaro is being planned. This new area is expected to reach a population of about 1,100,000 people.

Bokaro's economy is deeply tied to the steel and energy sectors. The Bokaro Steel Plant is the primary driver of the local economy. Other major companies also operate here. Vedanta Electrosteel Castings Limited operates a 2.2 MTPA steel plant. This company invested nearly Rs 80 billion into its project. Dalmia Cement Bharat Limited uses slag from the steel plant to run a 1.5 million tonne cement plant.

The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) also operates in the area. They manage the Bokaro Coal Bed Methane block. These industries create a complex network of production and supply.

The culture of Bokaro is often described as "Mini India." This is because the city is very cosmopolitan. People from many different ethnicities live there together. There are large communities from both North and South India. You can find people who speak Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam, and Telugu. The city has a strong influence from Bihari and Bengali cultures. Many different languages are spoken, including Hindi, Khortha, Urdu, Bengali, Santhali, and Maithili. This mix of people creates a unique and diverse social environment.
