Dhanbad is a major city located in the Indian state of Jharkhand. It is the second-most populated city in the state, following Jamshedpur. Many people call it the "economic capital of Jharkhand" because it is a primary financial hub. The city is also famously known as the "Coal Capital of India."

This title exists because the region houses some of the largest coal mines in the country. Dhanbad is a significant urban center, ranking as the 39th largest city in India. It also stands as the 33rd largest million-plus urban agglomeration in the nation.

The economy of Dhanbad is driven largely by its massive mineral resources. The city is surrounded by approximately 112 coal mines. These mines produce about 27.5 million tonnes of coal. This industry generates an annual income of 700 crore rupees.

Finally, it became part of Jharkhand in the year 2000.
