As of April 2023, Bochum had a population of 372,348 people. This makes it the 16th-largest city in Germany. It is also the sixth-largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The geography of Bochum is defined by its rolling hills. The city sits on the Bochumer Landrücken, which is a ridge of land. This ridge is part of the Ruhrhöhen, or the Ruhr Heights. The terrain is generally gentle, with most slopes under three per cent. However, some areas are steeper than others. For example, Kemnader Straße in the Stiepel district has a 5.1% gradient.

Water plays a vital role in the city's layout. Bochum is split between two different river catchments. To the south lies the Ruhr river catchment. To the north lies the Emscher river catchment. Both rivers are tributaries, or smaller rivers that flow into, the Rhine. The Ruhr is used for drinking water abstraction. The Emscher system was historically used for discharging waste water.

Since 1989, the Emschergenossenschaft has worked on ecological restoration in the area.

The climate in Bochum is classified as Oceanic. This means it has cool winters and short, warm summers. Extreme temperatures are not very common. However, the city can experience heat, with a peak of 40 °C recorded in 2019. Winters are often freezing from mid-November to late March. The city is in the 8a USDA plant hardiness zone. This allows some warmer plants, like rosemary, to grow.

Bochum has a deep history dating back to the 9th century. Charlemagne established a royal court at a junction of trade routes. The city was officially mentioned in 1041 as Cofbuokheim. In 1321, Count Engelbert II von der Marck granted it a town charter. The 19th century brought massive change through coal and steel industries. The population grew from 4,500 in 1850 to 100,000 by 1904.
