The land in Bochum is not flat. Instead, it is made of low, rolling hills. These hills sit on the Ruhr Heights. The city lies between two different river systems. The Ruhr river flows to the south of the city. The Emscher river flows to the north.

Most of the hills are gentle. They rarely have a slope of more than three per cent. However, some spots like Kemnader Straße are a bit steeper. You can find many types of plants here, with 844 different species. Many of the trees are oak and beech.

Bochum has a very long history. It dates back to the 9th century. A leader named Charlemagne set up a royal court there. This happened where two important trade paths met. The city was first written down in 1041. In 1321, it was granted a town charter. For a long time, the town was quite small. Everything changed in the 19th century. Coal mining and steel industries began to grow in the Ruhr area. This caused the city to grow very fast.

As industries grew, the number of people in Bochum jumped. In 1850, there were only about 4,500 people. By 1904, the population had reached 100,000. Many people moved there for work, including many from Poland. Today, the city is much larger. In April 2023, about 372,348 people lived in Bochum. This makes it the 16th-largest city in Germany. It is also the sixth-largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia.
