Because there is so much green space, the urban areas are quite dense. This means many people live close together in the built-up parts. About 81% of the homes are in multi-storey apartment buildings. Many of these flats are smaller than 100 square meters. The city is even building more homes to help its growing population.

Braunschweig has a long and busy history.

People do not know exactly when the town was first started. One legend says it grew from two different settlements. One was started by a man named Bruno in the year 861. The other was named after a man called Count Dankward. In the Middle Ages, the city was a huge center for trade. It was even a member of the Hanseatic League for hundreds of years.

Many famous leaders once ruled this city. Henry the Lion was a powerful duke who made it his capital.
