The city is split by the Teutoburg Forest hills. A long hiking trail called the Hermannsweg runs for 156 km along these ridges. The city center is in the Ravensberg Basin, but modern Bielefeld stretches across the hills into the Westphalian Basin.

The city has a long and busy history. Count Hermann IV of Ravensberg founded it in 1214. He wanted to guard a pass through the Teutoburg Forest. For a long time, it was known as the "city of linen." This was because of its many bleachfields used for fabric. In the 1800s, the area changed many times. It was part of Brandenburg-Prussia and later the Kingdom of Westphalia. After the wars of the early 1800s, it became part of the Province of Westphalia.

Industry and learning are very important here. In the mid-1800s, large spinning mills were built for making cloth. Other metal works began to open in the 1860s. A company called Dürkoppwerke AG started in 1867 to fix sewing machines. They even made cars from 1898 to 1927. Today, many famous companies work in Bielefeld. These include Dr. Oetker, which makes food, and the Möller Group.

The city also has a university founded in 1969. There are also many technical and vocational colleges for students.

Bielefeld has faced many difficult times. In 1938, the town's synagogue was burned during a violent event. During World War II, the city was hit by many bombs. In 1944, planes from the USAAF bombed the gas works and the railway yards. The RAF also bombed the town and a railway viaduct. The RAF even used a huge 10-tonne bomb on the viaduct in 1945. After the war, the British Army used the city as a headquarters. They stayed in the city until 2020.

There are many interesting things to see and do. You can visit Sparrenburg Castle or the Old Market Place.

There is even a funny joke about the city. Since 1994, some people have joked that Bielefeld does not exist at all! This is a silly way to tease the city through a fake conspiracy theory.
