The school also has special research groups called clusters of excellence. These groups study things like new fuels and high-speed communication. Professors and researchers work together to solve hard problems. This helps the university stay a leader in science.

The history of the school began a long time ago. In 1858, a prince received a large gift of money. He decided to use this money to start a technical school.

Many cities wanted the school, but Aachen won the spot. The school officially started in 1870. At first, it had only 223 students and 32 teachers. Its main job was to train engineers for the mining industry. Over many years, the school grew and changed a lot.

History brought both growth and hard times to the university. During World War I, many students left to join the war. Later, in 1933, the school faced very unfair treatment. Jewish and Communist professors and students were forced out.

During World War II, many university buildings were destroyed. In 1944, more than 70% of the buildings were damaged. After the war ended in 1945, the school began to rebuild. By the 1960s, it had 10,000 students and was growing fast.

Today, the campus is a mix of old and new places.
