Research is often organized into specialized groups called clusters of excellence. These clusters focus on specific scientific challenges like high-speed communication or renewable energy. This structure allows researchers to tackle global problems using advanced technology.

RWTH Aachen has several distinct organizational parts and academic groupings. The university is divided into ten different faculties that manage various subjects. It also maintains many institutes that conduct deep scientific investigations. The university belongs to several international alliances, such as the IDEA League. This league is a strategic partnership between five leading technology universities in Europe. It also helps lead the CESAER association for science and technology. These connections allow for student mobility and shared scientific goals across borders.

The history of the institution began with a charitable donation in 1858. Prince Frederick William of Prussia received 5,000 talers from an insurance company. He decided to use this money to found a Prussian institute of technology. Many cities like Cologne and Bonn competed to host the new school. Aachen eventually won the location because of its unique financing plan.

The school officially opened in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War. At its start, it had only 223 students and 32 teachers. Its primary goal was training engineers for the mining industry in the Ruhr area.

Throughout its history, the university faced significant periods of change and hardship. In 1880, it was reorganized as a Royal Technical University. This change allowed it to grant important professional degrees. However, World War I caused many students to leave the school. During the 1930s, the university experienced a dark period of injustice. Jewish and Communist professors and students were systematically excluded from the school.

World War II also caused massive physical damage to the campus. By October 1944, more than 70% of the university buildings were destroyed or damaged. After 1945, the university began a period of rapid recovery and expansion.

The scale of the university has grown immensely since the mid-20th century. In the 1960s, the school had 10,000 students. By 1980, that number grew to more than 25,000 students. By 1990, the population reached over 37,000 students. Today, the average number of students stays around 42,000. About one third of these students are women. The university also receives significant financial support for its excellence projects. Between 2007 and 2011, it received an additional €180 million in funding. This money supports advanced research and specialized graduate schools.

Modern campus life is defined by a mix of historic and contemporary architecture. The Main Building dates back to the school's founding in 1870. In contrast, the CARL building opened in 2017 to provide modern lecture space. This central auditorium can hold 4,000 students at once.

The university also manages various external facilities in cities like Jülich and Essen. Its location near the borders of Belgium and the Netherlands makes it very international. Over 7,000 international students are currently enrolled at the university. This unique position helps the school promote global scientific interaction and cultural exchange.
