ETH Zurich is a prestigious public research university located in Zurich, Switzerland. It focuses primarily on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, which are often grouped as STEM fields. The institution is a key part of the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology Domain. This domain is a consortium that includes the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, also known as EPFL. The university operates under the Swiss Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research. It serves as a major hub for global academic excellence and scientific discovery.

The academic structure of ETH Zurich is rigorous and highly specialized. Undergraduate students must complete intensive first-year examination blocks known as Basisprüfungen, or base examinations. These tests cover foundational subjects like mathematics, physics, and various engineering disciplines. They act as a filter to prepare students for advanced research. In mathematics-heavy programs, failure rates can reach between 50% and 60%. Doctoral students follow a different path through hands-on research. PhD candidates are hired as paid employees in laboratories. They conduct independent research while contributing to teaching duties.

The university is organized into 16 distinct departments. These departments cover a wide range of specialized fields. The Zentrum campus houses departments like Mathematics, Computer Science, and Mechanical and Process Engineering. It also includes the Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences. The Hönggerberg campus hosts different disciplines, such as Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Additionally, the university maintains a presence in Basel. The Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering is located there to collaborate with life science industries. This creates a strong connection between academic research and professional application.

ETH Zurich has a rich history that began in the mid-19th century. The Swiss Confederation founded the school on February 7, 1854. It originally opened as a polytechnic institute called the eidgenössische polytechnische Schule. At its start, it featured six faculties, including architecture and forestry. The creation of a federal university was a subject of great political debate. Liberals supported a federal school, while conservatives preferred cantonal control. In 1909, the institution gained the right to award doctorates. It officially adopted its current name, Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule, in 1911.

The physical presence of the university has expanded significantly over time. The Zentrum campus grew around a main building constructed between 1858 and 1864. This building was designed by the famous architect Gottfried Semper. He used a neoclassical style that emphasized bold massings and clear details. As the city grew, the university expanded into surrounding areas. To allow for more space, a new campus was built on the Hönggerberg hill. Construction there took place from 1964 to 1976. In 2005, the "Science City" project began to improve the Hönggerberg campus through sustainability.

Modern research at ETH Zurich utilizes cutting-edge technology and massive computing power. The ETH AI Center serves as the central hub for artificial intelligence research. The university also manages the Swiss National Supercomputing Center in Lugano-Cornaredo. In 2024, this center deployed the Alps Supercomputer. This machine contains over 10,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs. It is one of the largest academic supercomputers on the planet. Furthermore, the Laboratory of Ion Beam Physics specializes in advanced techniques like accelerator mass spectrometry. These tools support research in archaeology, earth sciences, and fundamental physics.
