Learning at this university involves a lot of hard work. Students must pass big exams in their first year. These are called Basisprüfungen, or base examinations. They cover important subjects like math and physics. These tests help prepare students for much harder research later on. Some programs are very difficult, and many students do not pass these first tests. For doctoral students, the work is even more hands-on. They work in laboratories as paid employees to help professors with new discoveries.

The university has a long and interesting history. It was founded on February 7, 1854, by the Swiss Confederation. At first, it was called a polytechnic school. It started with six different areas of study. These included architecture, chemistry, and even forestry. In 1909, the school began giving out doctorates to its students. Later, in 1911, it received its current name. Today, the school has grown to include 16 different departments.
