Beyond these core areas, the university offers degrees and diplomas in over 300 distinct fields of study.

The university operates across two main geographical locations on Montreal Island. The primary campus is situated on the slope of Mount Royal in the downtown Ville-Marie borough. A second campus is located in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, which sits west of the main campus.

This dual-campus structure supports a wide variety of academic and research activities. McGill holds a prestigious position in international academic circles. It is one of only two members of the Association of American Universities located outside the United States. Additionally, it is the sole Canadian member of the Global University Leaders Forum within the World Economic Forum.

The history of the university began with a Scottish merchant named James McGill.

Born in Glasgow in 1744, McGill moved to North America to pursue business in the fur trade. He was a successful merchant in Quebec, though he was also a slave owner. In his will, written between 1811 and 1813, he left his Burnside estate and 10,000 pounds to the Royal Institution for the Advancement of Learning (RIAL). This bequest required the funds to establish a college for education and the advancement of learning. Following legal battles with the heirs of his wife, McGill College received a royal charter from King George IV on March 31, 1821.

The Right Reverend George Mountain served as the first principal of the college.

The RIAL was a crucial organization that predated the university's formal establishment. Created in 1801 by an Act of the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada, it was originally intended to operate grammar schools. The RIAL managed the James McGill bequest to ensure the college's creation. By 1852, a revised Royal Charter established the trustees of the RIAL as the board of governors for McGill University. Today, the RIAL still exists as the corporate identity that manages the university and its various bodies. This includes the Macdonald Campus and the Montreal Neurological Institute.

Academic development at McGill progressed through several important stages. The university was inactive until 1829 when the Montreal Medical Institution became its first academic unit. This institution was Canada's first medical school, and it granted the nation's first medical degree in 1833.

The Faculty of Law followed in 1848, making it the oldest law faculty in the country. In 1896, the McGill School of Architecture was established, becoming the second such school in Canada.

Social changes also shaped the university's growth, particularly regarding women's education. Separate lectures for women began in 1884 through funding from Donald Smith. The first degrees were officially conferred upon women in 1888. In 1899, the Royal Victoria College opened as a residential college specifically for women.

Female undergraduate students were known as "Donaldas" and were members of this college until the 1970s. Today, the Royal Victoria College serves as part of the university's residence system, with some sections being mixed-gender.

McGill has had a profound impact on the global community through its people and its influence. The university's alumni and faculty include 15 Nobel laureates and 149 Rhodes Scholars.

The academic community also counts one Turing Award winner among its members. The university's influence extends into politics and law, with three former Prime Ministers of Canada and 14 Supreme Court justices among its alumni. In the realm of culture, alumni have won 9 Academy Awards, 13 Grammys, and 15 Emmys. Furthermore, 121 Olympians have attended the university, bringing home over 35 Olympic medals.

The university's legacy also includes its role in founding other major institutions. It helped establish the first post-secondary degree programs in British Columbia. This included chartering Victoria College in 1903 and supporting the McGill University College of British Columbia in 1908. These institutions eventually became the University of Victoria and the University of British Columbia. Additionally, the founders of the University of Alberta were both McGill alumni. Even during times of conflict, such as World War I, the university's connection to the world remained strong.
