Mannheim is located right where the Neckar and the Upper Rhine rivers meet. It is part of the Rhine-Neckar region, which is a huge area with nearly 2.4 million people. The city has over 315,000 residents living there today. It also sits near the border of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

One very special thing about Mannheim is how the streets are laid out.

In the center, the streets follow a neat grid pattern. This makes the city look like a collection of squares. Because of this, people call it the "Quadratestadt," or the Square City. Most streets in the center do not even have names. Instead, people use letters and numbers to find their way around the blocks. At the southern end of this grid sits the large Mannheim Palace.
