Long ago, the Roman Empire occupied parts of it. Later, groups like the Alemanni lived in the region. In the 19th century, it was made of different parts. These were the Grand Duchy of Baden and the Kingdom of Württemberg. After World War II, the Allies created three separate states. These were South Baden, Württemberg-Baden, and Württemberg-Hohenzollern. In April 1952, these three states merged into one.
