Many people visit this area to see the beautiful scenery.

A unique feature of the city is the Bächle. These are small streams that run through the old town. They are fed by water from the Dreisam River. These runnels run along almost all the streets and alleys. In the summer, the moving water helps keep the air cool. The water also makes a pleasant gurgling sound. People say that if you accidentally step into a Bächle, you will marry a local person.

Freiburg has a history that goes back many centuries. It was founded in 1120 by Konrad and Duke Berthold III. The name means "free town" or "fortified town of free citizens." This shows the town had a lot of independence. In the 1300s, the city became very rich. This happened because of silver mines on Mount Schauinsland. The city even minted its own coin called the Rappenpfennig in 1327.
