This stability allowed the student body and faculty to grow rapidly during the 1880s. A major milestone occurred in 1900, when Freiburg became the first German university to accept female students.
By the start of World War I, the university had reached 3,000 students. This era also saw the construction of the new main building in 1911.
The university experienced dark periods during the Nazi dictatorship. During this time, the institution underwent a process called "political alignment," or Gleichschaltung. Under the rector Martin Heidegger, Jewish faculty members were forced to leave the university. This happened because of the Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service. The university also saw the promotion of racist views by certain faculty members.
These ideas were used to support the Nuremberg laws. In 1944, a bombing raid destroyed much of the institute quarter and the University Church. After World War II, the university was reopened and began a period of reconstruction. In 2003, the university opened a memorial to honor the victims of National Socialism among its staff and students.
Despite these challenges, the university has produced world-changing ideas and people. It is associated with many famous thinkers, such as Max Weber and Hannah Arendt. The "Freiburg School" refers to the ideas of ordoliberalism developed by economists like Walter Eucken. This economic theory helped drive the German social market economy. The university's academic excellence is reflected in its many awards. As of October 2020, 22 Nobel laureates were affiliated with the university as alumni, faculty, or researchers. Additionally, 15 academics earned the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize while working there.
