The history of the school is very long and interesting. Some people trace its roots back to the year 1484. That was when a city library was first started. The modern university was officially founded in 1914. It was started as a "citizens' university" with help from local people. Wealthy families in Frankfurt gave much of the money needed. In 1932, the school was named after a famous poet named Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

Many famous and smart people have been part of this school. Twenty people who studied or worked here won Nobel Prizes. These are very important awards for great discoveries. Scientists like Max von Laue and Max Born studied here. The school is also known for the Frankfurt School of philosophy. This group included thinkers like Theodor Adorno and Walter Benjamin. During a hard time in history, many teachers and students were treated unfairly. The school has worked to make things right, like returning books to families in 2026.
