The city uses a special system of medieval canals and water towers. This system shows how people used hydraulic engineering long ago. Because this system is so unique, UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site. The city also sits near the Lechfeld, which is a large plain left behind after the ice age. This area has many rare plants and animals. The city's water and nature make it a very special place to visit.

Augsburg is one of the oldest cities in Germany.

It was founded in 15 BC by the Romans. They named the settlement Augusta Vindelicorum after the Emperor Augustus. By the year 120 AD, it was the capital of a Roman province. The city has seen many changes and battles over hundreds of years. It was once a Free Imperial City, which meant it was independent. This independence lasted from 1276 until 1803.

During the Thirty Years' War, a long siege caused many people to die from hunger and disease. The population dropped from 70,000 down to only 16,000 people. Later, during the Second World War, the city was also part of a big conflict. Factories in the city were bombed, and many people were forced to work in them. Today, Augsburg is a peaceful university town. It is a place where history and modern life live together.
