He is often called the father of the bicycle. His most famous invention was a machine called the Laufmaschine. This name means "running machine" in German.

People also called it a velocipede or a draisine. It was a very early way for people to travel without using a horse. This invention was a huge step toward the way we move today.

The Laufmaschine worked in a very simple way. It was a two-wheeled machine, but it did not have pedals. Instead, the rider sat on a frame and used their feet to push against the ground.

This helped the rider move forward step by step. It used the same two-wheeler idea that we see in modern bicycles and motorcycles. It was one of the first ways humans could use machines for personal travel.

Drais was a very busy inventor who made many different things. In 1812, he made a device to record piano music on paper. He also created the first typewriter that used a keyboard in 1821.

Later, he made a machine to grind meat and a special cooker that saved wood. In 1842, he even made a foot-driven vehicle for railways. People still call those railway handcars "draisines" today. He was always looking for new ways to solve problems.

Many important dates marked his life and his work. He took his first big ride on June 12, 1817. He rode from Mannheim to a place called Rheinau. The trip took a little more than one hour.

In 1818, Grand Duke Karl gave him special rights to protect his inventions. However, life became very hard for him later on. Because of political trouble, he lost his money and his pension. He died in Karlsruhe on December 10, 1851.

We still see the impact of his work in our world today. Even though his running machine was banned for a while, it led to the modern bicycle.

Germany even put his face on postage stamps to remember him. One stamp from 1985 celebrated his 200th birthday. Another stamp from 2017 showed his machine with a bicycle shadow. His ideas helped change how everyone travels from place to place.
