This machine worked using a four-stroke engine. A four-stroke engine is a type of motor that uses fuel to create movement. The engine sat between the rear wheels. It used two roller chains to send power to the axle. This allowed the vehicle to move without any horses pulling it. Benz also invented many other parts like the spark plug and the carburetor.

Sadly, his father died when Carl was only two years old. His mother worked very hard to give him a great education. Carl studied very hard at a technical school. He graduated in 1864 when he was only 19 years old. He spent many years training in different engineering jobs.

In 1885, Benz finished his first motorwagen. He received a patent for it in 1886.
