He was born in 1846 in the Kingdom of Württemberg. As a young man, he showed a great talent for working with machines. A director named Gustav Werner noticed this skill and helped him study engineering. By age 19, Maybach was already a qualified designer. He eventually became a key partner to Gottlieb Daimler. Together, they created small, fast engines that could power many different things. Because his designs were so good, people in France called him the "King of Designers."

Maybach and Daimler worked to make engines that were much better than older models.

In 1885, they built a special engine called the Standuhr. This name means "grandfather clock" because it looked like a pendulum clock. This engine used a new part called a carburetor. A carburetor is a tool that mixes fuel with air so the engine can run well. They also used a hot tube ignition to help the engine work. This allowed the engine to run much faster than older machines. These improvements were very important for the future of travel.

These new engines allowed people to build many different types of vehicles.

In 1885, they put an engine on a wooden bicycle to make the Reitwagen. This was the world's first motorcycle. They also put engines into boats to help them move on water.

They even built the first motorized airship to fly through the sky. In 1889, they showed a brand new automobile in Paris. This car was designed from scratch rather than being a modified carriage. These inventions helped start the modern car industry in many different countries.

Maybach's career involved many different companies and big changes.

In 1890, he helped found the Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft, also known as DMG. He served as the Chief Designer for this large company. Later, he left DMG in 1907 because he did not agree with the leaders. He and his son, Karl, started their own company in 1909. This new business made engines for Zeppelins. After World War I, they began making large, luxury cars. Maybach's name became a symbol of high quality for many years.

Even after Wilhelm passed away in 1929, his work continued to shape technology.

His son, Karl Maybach, took over the family business. During World War II, the company made engines for many German tanks. These included famous tanks like the Panther and the Tiger. Later, the company made diesel engines and eventually became part of Daimler-Benz. In 2014, the Mercedes-Maybach brand was created to make very special luxury cars. Maybach's ideas from over a hundred years ago still influence how we design engines today.
