A director named Gustav Werner noticed this skill and helped him study engineering. By age 19, Maybach was already a qualified designer. He eventually became a key partner to Gottlieb Daimler. Together, they created small, fast engines that could power many different things. Because his designs were so good, people in France called him the "King of Designers."

Maybach and Daimler worked to make engines that were much better than older models.

Later, he left DMG in 1907 because he did not agree with the leaders. He and his son, Karl, started their own company in 1909. This new business made engines for Zeppelins. After World War I, they began making large, luxury cars. Maybach's name became a symbol of high quality for many years.

Even after Wilhelm passed away in 1929, his work continued to shape technology.

Born on February 9, 1846, in Heilbronn, Maybach showed an early talent for technical tasks. After losing his parents at a young age, he was supported by a philanthropic institution in Reutlingen. There, the director Gustav Werner recognized his technical inclination. Werner sent him to an engineering workshop to foster his skills. By the age of 19, Maybach was already a qualified designer working on stationary engines. His career would soon become inseparable from the history of the internal combustion engine.

Maybach’s most significant partnership was with Gottlieb Daimler. In 1869, Maybach followed Daimler to Karlsruhe to work on heavy locomotives. Later, in 1872, they joined Nicolaus Otto at Deutz-AG in Cologne. Otto had patented the four-stroke cycle engine, which uses intake, compression, power, and exhaust strokes. Maybach served as Chief Designer there, focusing on improving this design for commercial use. After serious disagreements led Daimler and Maybach to leave Deutz-AG in 1880, they founded a new company in Cannstatt. They worked out of a brick extension of a summer house, which neighbors once mistook for a counterfeiting workshop.

The duo focused on creating engines that were both light and high-speed. In 1883, they patented an engine fueled by ligroin. This was a major step toward the modern petrol engine. By 1885, they developed the Standuhr, or "grandfather clock" engine, due to its resemblance to a pendulum clock.

This engine was revolutionary because it achieved 600 rpm, whereas most engines at the time only reached 120 to 180 rpm. Maybach also invented the first float-fed carburetor in 1885. This device mixed evaporated gasoline with air to ensure efficient fuel use. These technical breakthroughs provided the foundation for almost all modern motorized transport.

These compact engines allowed for the creation of entirely new types of vehicles. In 1885, Maybach and Daimler attached an engine to a wooden bicycle, creating the Reitwagen, the world's first motorcycle.

By 1889, Maybach had designed a complete automobile from scratch, rather than just adapting a stagecoach. This vehicle featured a V-configured two-cylinder engine and a four-speed toothed gearbox. These inventions helped spark the modern car industry in France, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

In 1890, Maybach and Daimler founded the Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG) to build high-speed engines. Maybach served as Chief Designer, but the company faced a chaotic decade. Investors brought in new capital, which some historians called a "pact with the devil." Maybach often clashed with the new chairmen over the direction of the company. He was eventually rejected from the Board of Management and left DMG in 1891. He continued his design work independently, even employing workers paid by Daimler. In 1894, he designed the Phoenix engine, which used four cylinders arranged in a single block. This design gained worldwide attention and helped solidify his reputation as the "King of Designers."

After leaving DMG, Maybach founded Maybach-Motorenbau GmbH in 1909 with his son, Karl. Their company initially manufactured engines for Zeppelins. Following the signing of the Versailles Treaty in 1919, the firm transitioned to producing large luxury vehicles branded as "Maybach."

The brand became a symbol of extreme quality and prestige. Wilhelm Maybach passed away in 1929, and Karl Maybach took over the business. During World War II, the company designed engines for many German tanks, including the Panther, Tiger I, and Tiger II heavy tanks. This period marked a significant shift in the company's industrial output.

In the decades following the war, Maybach Motorenbau remained a subsidiary of Luftschiffbau Zeppelin, focusing on diesel engines. During the 1960s, the company came under the control of Daimler-Benz and was renamed MTU Friedrichshafen. The Maybach brand name was revived in 2002 as a luxury marque, though it was not successful. Daimler-Benz announced in 2011 that they would stop producing standalone Maybach automobiles by 2013. However, the legacy continues through the Mercedes-Maybach brand, launched in 2014. This brand produces ultra-luxury versions of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, carrying Maybach's name into the modern era.
