Gottlieb Daimler was a German engineer. 

In 1883, they made a special engine. They called it "Daimler's Dream." It used liquid fuel to run. This engine was light and small. It could run at 750 rpm. This means it could spin 750 times every minute.
In 1885, they made a new engine. It had a vertical cylinder. Daimler called it the "grandfather clock" engine.

Daimler's path to engineering began with a different trade. After completing primary school at age 13, he trained as a gunsmith. He passed his craft test in 1852 with two engraved pistols. However, he soon decided to pursue mechanical engineering instead. He enrolled at the School for Advanced Training in the Industrial Arts in Stuttgart. He later studied at the Stuttgart Polytechnic Institute to learn about steam locomotives. During this time, he developed a strong belief that steam would eventually be replaced. He spent time in England to study advanced machine tools. 
In 1872, Daimler became the factory manager at the Deutz-AG-Gasmotorenfabrik in Cologne. He worked alongside Nicolaus Otto, who had developed the four-stroke cycle engine. The four-stroke cycle uses four specific piston movements: intake, compression, power, and exhaust. Daimler and his partner, Wilhelm Maybach, wanted to improve these designs. They specifically wanted to create smaller engines that could run at high speeds. However, Daimler and Otto had many disagreements regarding engine design. Daimler was eventually fired in 1880 due to these professional tensions. He received 112,000 Gold marks in shares as compensation for his patents. 
Daimler and Maybach moved to Cannstatt to work independently. They used their savings to build a workshop in a brick extension of a summer house. In 1883, they patented an engine fueled by ligroin. Ligroin is a petroleum fraction that was commonly sold in pharmacies as a cleaner. This engine, known as "Daimler's Dream," was small and lightweight. It could reach a speed of 750 rpm, or revolutions per minute. This was much faster than the engines used for stationary industrial work. They also used a hot tube ignition system to start the combustion. This system used a heated tube rather than the slower electrical systems of the time.
In 1885, the duo developed the "grandfather clock" engine, or Standuhr. They gave it this name because the engine resembled a large pendulum clock. This version featured a vertical cylinder with 100 cc of displacement. It produced 1 hp, which stands for one horsepower. The engine could run at 600 rpm, which was significantly faster than the 120 to 180 rpm common in older engines. To make this possible, they invented a carburetor. A carburetor is a device that mixes fuel with air before it enters the engine. This allowed the engine to run efficiently on liquid petroleum. 
Daimler used these high-speed engines to create new types of vehicles. In November 1885, they built the Reitwagen, which was the first internal combustion motorcycle. The Reitwagen was a two-wheeler with two spring-loaded stabilizer wheels. Maybach tested it by riding it for three kilometers along the river Neckar. They also applied their engine technology to boats and coaches. In 1886, Daimler installed an engine in a four-seater coach. This helped establish the early automobile industry in Germany. 
Daimler's professional life involved many organizational changes and challenges. In 1890, he and Maybach formed the Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft, or DMG. The company sold its first automobile in 1892. Daimler faced several difficulties with stockholders, which led to his resignation in 1893. However, this resignation was reversed in 1894. Daimler passed away in 1900, leaving a massive legacy in engineering. He is often remembered as "the father of the motorcycle." His work laid the foundation for the modern transportation systems we use today.
