Diesel's life ended with a mysterious disappearance. On September 29, 1913, he boarded the SS Dresden in Antwerp. He was traveling to London for a business meeting. He retired to his cabin at 10 p.m. but was never seen alive again. His hat and overcoat were found near the afterdeck railing. Ten days later, a crew found a body in the Eastern Scheldt. Personal items from the body were identified as belonging to Diesel by his son, Eugen. People have many theories about his death, including suicide or murder. However, the exact cause of his disappearance remains unsolved.
Today, the legacy of Rudolf Diesel is found in many industries. His engines are used in ships, locomotives, trucks, and modern automobiles. They are also used in agricultural machines and stationary engines. Diesel was interested in alternative fuels like coal dust and vegetable oil. He even ran his engine on peanut oil. Modern engines can run on biodiesel, which is often made from algae or vegetable oils. This connection to renewable resources continues his goal of efficient energy use.
