A monastery was founded there around the year 750. The name Lucerne might come from a Latin word for a fish called a pike. This could mean it was a good spot for fishing in the Reuss river. By the year 1290, the city had about 3,000 people. It became important because it was a gateway for trade. In 1332, Lucerne joined with other towns to form the Swiss Confederacy. This group helped the area become independent from the rule of Austria.

Many famous people have visited or lived in Lucerne.

One of its most famous sights is the wooden Chapel Bridge. This bridge was first built in the 14th century. In August 1993, a large fire damaged the bridge. It destroyed many of the old paintings inside. Workers spent 3.4 million Swiss francs to fix it. They reopened the bridge to the public in 1994. In 2010, the city also grew by joining with the town of Littau.
