It sits on the northern foothills of the Swiss Alps. The land is very varied and full of natural features. You can find many hills, rivers, and large lakes here. The highest point in the canton is the Brienzer Rothorn. To the south, it borders the cantons of Obwalden and Nidwalden. It also sits near Schwyz, Zug, Aargau, and Bern.

Nature plays a huge role in how the land is used. About 55% of the total land area is used for farming. Another 30% of the area is covered in thick woods. The rest of the land is either built up or is water and mountains. The Reuss river is a very important part of the landscape. It flows out of Lake Lucerne and through the capital city. Many smaller rivers and streams also flow through the valleys here. This mix of water, trees, and farms makes the area very green.

People have lived in this region for thousands of years. Very old stone tools and cave bear bones were found on Mt. Rigi. Around 17,000 BC, the big glaciers finally disappeared from the area. Later, people built special homes on wooden poles near the water. These are called pile dwellings, and they are found in places like Wauwilermoos.

These ancient villages used clay for hearths and made tools from bone and stone. Today, these sites are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They show us how early humans lived near lakes and rivers.

The history of the canton is full of big changes. The city of Lucerne grew around a monastery founded around the year 750. In 1291, the Habsburg family purchased the city from a monastery. This event helped lead to the start of Switzerland. Lucerne joined the Swiss Confederation in 1332 as the fourth member.

In 1386, a big battle took place near Sempach. This victory helped the canton grow even more. Over many centuries, the city gained more land through treaties and purchases.

Today, the canton is organized into six different districts.

These districts include Entlebuch, Hochdorf, Luzern-Land, Luzern-Stadt, Sursee, and Willisau. There are 79 municipalities, which are smaller local areas, across the whole canton. The city of Lucerne is the capital and is quite busy. As of 2025, the population is quite large. Many people from other places live here too. The government is run by a council of five members.
