You can find it sitting in the west-central part of the country. It is the second-largest canton if you measure by land area or by the number of people living there. The capital city is also named Bern, and it serves as the main seat for the Swiss government.

The canton is bilingual, which means people officially use both German and French. A bear is the special symbol for this region, often shown on a red and yellow background.

The land in Bern has many different shapes and faces. It contains parts of all three major natural regions found in Switzerland. First, there are the Jura Mountains, known as the Bernese Jura. Next, there is the Swiss Plateau, called the Bernese Mittelland. Finally, the high and snowy Alps are part of the region, known as the Bernese Oberland.

Because of these mountains, many people visit famous resort towns like Interlaken and Gstaad. You might also see tall waterfalls, such as the Staubbachfall, in these beautiful areas.

In the Iron Age, people became very skilled at making things. They forged iron into swords, daggers, and knives. They also made beautiful jewelry using gold, bronze, and even jet. Craftsmen in places like Bern-Engehalbinsel even had studios for making glass and ceramics.

The Romans also left a big mark on the history of Bern. They built many roads to help people travel through the mountains. They also built villas, which were large homes for wealthy people. Some of these villas had beautiful floor art called mosaics.

The Romans also built forts to guard the roads over the Jura Mountains. After the Roman era, different groups of people moved into the area. Germanic settlers moved in, and the local languages began to change over time.

In the Middle Ages, the region saw many changes in who was in charge. The area was once part of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1323, Bern entered an alliance with the Swiss Forest Cantons. Later, in 1353, it officially joined the Old Swiss Confederacy.
