While the Swiss constitution says the country has no official capital, Bern is the federal city. This means it is the seat of the government. The Federal Assembly meets in the city.

It is the fifth largest city in the country. About 146,000 people live in the city itself. The wider area has over 400,000 people.

The city's shape was made by nature. A large river called the Aare flows in a wide loop around the old town.

This river created a hilly peninsula for the city to grow on. The ground in Bern is very uneven. Some parts are 60 metres higher than others.

Much of the land around the city is green. About one third of the area is covered in forests. The rest is used for farms, roads, and homes.

Bern has a very long history. The Zähringer family likely founded the medieval city in 1191.

They may have been led by Berthold V, the Duke of Zähringen. In 1218, the city became a free imperial city. Later, in 1353, Bern joined the Swiss Confederacy. It became one of the first eight cantons.

Over hundreds of years, the city grew and changed. It even became the federal city in 1848. In the 1920s, the population passed 100,000 people.

They use many different local ways of speaking. One common way is called Bernese German. This is a local version of the Alemannic dialect. When the government writes documents, they use Swiss Standard German. This helps everyone understand the official rules. People can use any kind of German when they talk to authorities. It is a city with many different voices.

There are many interesting stories about the name Bern. One legend says the founder promised to name the city after the first animal he saw. That animal was a bear.

This is why the bear is on the city's coat of arms. Another idea is that the name comes from the Italian city of Verona. Some experts think it might even be a very old Celtic word.

No one is completely sure which story is true. The city's old town is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a place where history feels very alive.
