It is a wooden footbridge that crosses the Reuss river. You can find it in the city of Lucerne. This bridge is a famous symbol for the whole city. It is the oldest wooden covered bridge in all of Europe. It is also the oldest truss bridge still standing in the world. A truss bridge uses wooden parts to stay strong and steady.

This bridge works in a very interesting way. It is a truss bridge made of many wooden parts. These parts use triangles and struts to hold the weight. The bridge sits on piled trestles in the water. It spans the river diagonally to connect different parts of the city. Long ago, it helped link the old town to the new town. This helped keep the city safe from attacks from the south.

The history of this place goes back a long time. People built the bridge in the year 1365. It was part of the walls that protected Lucerne. Nearby, there is a tall tower called the Wasserturm. This water tower is even older than the bridge. For many years, the tower served many different roles. It was used as a prison and a place for archives. It also held the local treasury for the city.

There are many amazing facts about the bridge and its art. The bridge has triangular frames inside with beautiful paintings. A painter named Hans Heinrich Wägmann made these in the 1600s. He painted scenes about the history of Lucerne. There were once 158 paintings on the bridge. Most of the boards for these were made of spruce wood. Some were even made from linden or maple wood.

A sad event happened to the bridge in 1993. A large fire broke out on August 18 of that year. The fire destroyed two thirds of the interior paintings. Many people worked hard to fix the damage. They spent 3.4 million Swiss francs to rebuild it. The bridge opened to the public again in April 1994. Today, people from all over come to see it. It remains one of the main sights in Switzerland.
