It is a rock relief that shows a dying lion. This lion is a symbol of memory and sadness. People visit this site every year to see it. About 1.4 million tourists come to look at the carving. It is considered one of the most famous monuments in the country. In 2006, the government put it under special protection. This helps keep the stone safe for the future.

The carving shows a very specific scene in the rock. A lion lies there with a spear stuck in its side. The lion rests near two different shields. One shield has the fleur-de-lis, which is a symbol for the French monarchy. The other shield shows the coat of arms of Switzerland. The monument is ten metres long and six metres high. Below the lion, there is an inscription in the stone. It lists the names of officers and the number of soldiers.

It shows that 760 soldiers died and 350 survived.

This monument honors the Swiss Guards who died in 1792. These soldiers were in France during the French Revolution. They were defending the Tuileries Palace in Paris. Revolutionaries stormed the palace on August 10, 1792. The guards ran low on ammunition during the fight. They were overwhelmed by much larger numbers of people. About 760 guards were killed during the fighting or after they surrendered. Many others died later in prison from their wounds.

A man named Karl Pfyffer von Altishofen helped create the memorial. He was an officer who was away in Lucerne during the fight. He wrote a book about the Swiss Guards. This book helped people want to build a monument. He started collecting money in 1818 for the project. Most of the money came from royal houses in Europe. He asked Bertel Thorvaldsen to design the image. Then, Lukas Ahorn carved it into a sandstone quarry. The work was finished in 1821.

Many famous people have written about this stone lion. The author Mark Twain called it a very moving piece of stone. He said it was the most mournful piece of stone in the world. Other writers like Thomas Carlyle have also mentioned it. Even the sculptor T. M. Brady made a similar work. He made a marble version in 1894 in Atlanta, Georgia. That version was called "The Lion" and honored soldiers from the American Civil War. The Lucerne Lion remains a powerful symbol of loyalty and bravery.
