The lion rests near two shields. One shield has a fleur-de-lis design. This is a symbol of the French monarchy. The other shield shows the Swiss coat of arms. The monument is ten metres long. It is also six metres high. An officer named Karl Pfyffer helped pay for it. He collected money from royal families in Europe. Many people visit the site every year.
