Michelangelo made it between 1498 and 1499. It shows Mary holding her son, Jesus. The stone is white Carrara marble.

The statue has a special shape. It looks like a pyramid. Mary's head is at the very top. The stone gets wider at the bottom. This part shows the rocks of Golgotha.

Michelangelo made Mary look very young. Some think this shows her purity. Others think he was inspired by a poem. He also made the figures look natural. It is hard to fit a grown man in a lap. Because of this, the sizes are not perfect.

This is the only work Michelangelo ever signed. He carved his name on a sash.

He did this after someone doubted his work. In 1972, a man damaged the statue. He hit it with a hammer. Workers had to fix the nose and arm. Now, the statue sits behind bulletproof glass. It stays in Saint Peter's Basilica in Vatican City.
