He is most famous for his incredible skill as a marksman. Many stories say he was an expert with a crossbow. He was also known as a brave mountain climber. His story is more than just a tale of skill. It is a story about standing up to unfair rulers. Because of his actions, he is often called the father of the Swiss Confederacy.

The legend tells of a very difficult test involving an apple.

A leader named Albrecht Gessler demanded that people bow to his hat. Tell refused to show this respect to the hat. As punishment, Gessler made Tell shoot an apple off his son's head. Tell used his crossbow to hit the apple perfectly. However, Gessler saw that Tell had a second bolt ready. Tell admitted he would have used it to hit Gessler if he had missed the apple. This brave defiance led to many more events.

Historians look at different records to find the truth about Tell. The first mentions appear in the White Book of Sarnen. This book was written by Hans Schriber, a state secretary. Another early account is a song from the 1470s called the Tellenlied.

A writer named Aegidius Tschudi wrote a famous version around 1570. Tschudi added many specific details to the story. He gave Tell the full name Wilhelm. He also said Tell was from Bürglen in the canton of Uri. He even gave a date for the apple shot as 18 November 1307.

Many famous places are linked to the life of William Tell.

Tell was said to have escaped his captors by leaping from a boat. This happened at the Axen cliffs on Lake Lucerne. The spot where he jumped is called Tell's slab. He also reportedly killed Gessler on a road between Immensee and Küssnacht. This place is known as the Hohle Gasse.

There is even a memorial chapel at the site of his leap. These real places help make the legend feel very alive.

Tell has remained a powerful symbol for hundreds of years. In the 19th century, he represented resistance against aristocratic rule. This was especially true during the Revolutions of 1848 in Europe.

Some people even spoke of the "Three Tells." These were three men who dressed in historical costumes during the peasant war of 1653. They wanted to show that the spirit of Tell was still alive. His image can be found on many things today.
