William's life changed through many different steps. He was born into the House of Nassau in 1533. His cousin, René of Chalon, died without any children in 1544. René left all his titles and lands to William. This included the title of Prince of Orange. To get these lands, William had to receive a Catholic education. He studied in Breda and Brussels under Mary of Hungary. Later, he became a favorite of the imperial family. He even became a captain in the cavalry in 1551.

William's journey from a loyal servant to a rebel was complex. He originally served the Spanish rulers in the Netherlands. He was a member of the Council of State. He was also a governor for several provinces. However, he grew unhappy with how the Spanish ruled. He did not like how power moved away from local groups. He also disliked the persecution of Dutch Protestants. William believed that monarchs should not rule over people's souls. He wanted people to have freedom of religion.
