Balthasar Gérard was a man who changed history through a single act. He was born in Vuillafans, a village in the Franche-Comté region. His father, Jean Gérard, was a landowner and a jurist. His mother was named Barbe d'Emskerque. Because of his family, Gérard grew up with a strong Catholic faith. He eventually went to the University of Dole to study law. This background shaped the man he became during a time of great conflict.

In 1580, King Philip II of Spain made a major announcement. He offered a huge reward to anyone who could capture or kill William the Silent. William was the leader of the Dutch Revolt. The King offered 25,000 crowns, a title, and land as a prize. Gérard admired the King and decided to take action. He traveled to places like Luxembourg and Trier to plan his move. He even wrote a letter to the Prince of Parma to explain his goal.

On July 10, 1584, Gérard carried out his plan in the city of Delft. He waited in the courtyard of a building called the Prinsenhof. He had even bought two pistols for this moment. As William the Silent walked up some stairs, Gérard jumped from a dark corner. He fired two shots at the leader. This event was very important in history. It was the first time a head of state was killed with a handheld firearm.

Gérard tried to escape after the shooting. He ran toward a moat and hoped to jump into the water. He even carried a pig's bladder to help him float. However, he stumbled over a pile of rubbish. Guards and servants caught him quickly. They brought him to the city magistrates for a trial. During his questioning, Gérard did not seem sorry for what he had done. He even compared himself to the biblical figure David.

The punishment for Gérard was very severe. The court in Delft ordered many forms of torture before his death. On July 14, 1584, he was executed in the market square. After his death, King Philip II gave land to Gérard's family instead of money. The family was also raised to the rank of peerage. Even today, the street where he was born in Vuillafans is named Rue Gérard. His story remains a dark part of the history of the Dutch Revolt.
