Guy Fawkes was a man who lived a very busy life. He was born in York, England, around April 13, 1570.

His father, Edward, died when Guy was only eight years old. After his father died, his mother married a man named Dionis Baynbrigge. This new family was Catholic, which may be why Guy became Catholic too. He went to school in York, where he studied with future priests. Some of his school friends later joined him in his secret plans.

Fawkes spent many years as a soldier in Europe. He traveled to the continent to fight in the Eighty Years' War. He fought for Catholic Spain against the Dutch and the French.

During this time, he became a skilled officer. He even traveled to Spain to ask for help for a rebellion in England. While in Spain, he used the name Guido. He wanted to find support for English Catholics, but the Spanish leaders would not help him.

In 1604, Fawkes joined a small group of English Catholics. This group was led by a man named Robert Catesby. They had a very dangerous plan to kill King James I.

The group wanted to blow up the House of Lords with gunpowder. They met at an inn called the Duck and Drake in London. Fawkes used the fake name John Johnson to hide his identity. He worked as a caretaker to help the group stay hidden.

The group found a room beneath the House of Lords. This room was an undercroft, which is a space under a building. They stored many barrels of gunpowder there to hide them.

In late 1605, the plan was almost ready. However, an anonymous letter warned the government about the plot. On November 5, the authorities searched the palace and found Fawkes. He was caught while he was guarding the explosives.

Fawkes was caught and questioned by the government. He was sentenced to death for his part in the plot.

He died in January 1606 during his execution. People in the United Kingdom still remember this event today. They celebrate Guy Fawkes Night every year on November 5.

Families often light bright fireworks and burn effigies on bonfires.
