His father was a captain of a ship named Olifantstromp. When Tromp was only twelve, his father died during a fight with pirates. The pirates captured the boy and sold him into slavery. He worked as a cabin boy in a place called Salé. Later, he was captured again by different pirates near Tunis. He stayed a slave until he was twenty-four years old. Eventually, he was allowed to leave as a free man.

After he became free, Tromp joined the Dutch navy in 1622.

He worked his way up from a lieutenant to a great commander. In 1637, he became the Lieutenant-Admiral of Holland and West Frisia. He was a very careful leader of his sailors. He insisted that his ships have enough food and supplies. He also wanted his ships to be well-manned and ready. He was known for having a very strong and good character.

One of his greatest wins was at the Battle of the Downs.

During this fight, he destroyed a large part of a Spanish fleet. He was also the first leader to use a "line of battle" tactic. This meant ships sailed in a long line to fight together. This new way of fighting changed how sea battles were won. Because of his skill, he was even knighted by the King of France. He was a true hero to the Dutch people.

In 1652, a new war began between the Dutch and the English.
