He was born around 1550 in a village called Formerum. Barentsz spent much of his career looking for a Northeast Passage. This was a sea path through the Arctic to reach China. He believed that open water existed north of Siberia. He thought the sun's light would melt the ice. This idea drove him to lead many difficult voyages.

His first voyage began on June 5, 1594.

He sailed from the island of Texel on a ship named Mercury. During this trip, the crew met a polar bear for the first time. They also saw a large herd of 200 walruses. Barentsz reached the west coast of Novaya Zemlya. However, large icebergs forced him to turn back. Even though he did not find the passage, the trip was a success.

In 1595, Prince Maurice of Orange sent Barentsz on a second trip.

This group had six ships filled with goods for trade. The crew met about 20 Samoyed people during this journey. Sadly, two sailors were killed during a polar bear attack. The voyage ended when the Kara Sea froze over. This second attempt was considered a failure.

Barentsz's third voyage started in 1596 with two small ships.

The crew discovered Bear Island and the land of Spitsbergen. They also found a place they called Tusk Bay. On July 17, they reached Novaya Zemlya. Suddenly, their ship became stuck in thick ice. The 16-man crew was stranded for almost a year. They built a wooden lodge called Het Behouden Huys to survive.

They slept with warm stones and cannonballs to stay warm. They ate food like salted beef, bread, and cheese. In January 1597, they saw a strange light called a polar mirage. Barentsz died on the return trip on June 20, 1597.
