Dirk Hartog was a famous Dutch sailor from the 1600s. He was born into a family that worked on the sea. He became a ship leader when he was 30 years old. He spent many years trading goods in the Baltic and Mediterranean seas. In 1616, he began working for the Dutch East India Company. This group was also called the VOC. He was given command of a ship named the Eendracht.

His journey began in January 1616 in the Netherlands. He sailed with a fleet of other VOC ships. A large storm hit the ships during the trip. This storm separated Hartog from the rest of his fleet. He arrived at the Cape of Good Hope all by himself. Then he sailed across the Indian Ocean toward Batavia. He used strong winds called the "Roaring Forties" to help him. These winds helped ships move much faster toward Java.

On October 25, 1616, Hartog saw some islands. These islands had no people living on them. He landed on an island near Shark Bay in Australia. This was the second time Europeans had landed in Australia. The first group was Willem Janszoon in 1606. However, Hartog was the first to land on the western coast. He spent three days looking at the land and the islands. He called the area Eendrachtsland after his ship.

Before he left, Hartog wanted to leave a record. He attached a pewter plate to a wooden post. He scratched a note into the metal about his visit. The note said his ship arrived on October 25, 1616. It also named the skipper and the crew members. Hartog then sailed north along the coast to make charts. He finally reached Batavia in December 1616. This was five months later than he expected to arrive.

Many years later, a man named Willem de Vlamingh found the plate. It was half-buried in the sand on the island. De Vlamingh put a new plate there to replace it. He took the original plate back to Amsterdam. Today, that plate is kept in the Rijksmuseum. The island where he landed is now called Dirk Hartog Island. Many towns in Australia even have streets named after him.
