He worked for the Dutch East India Company. This was a very large group for trading goods. Janszoon was born around the year 1570. He grew up in the Netherlands. He spent many years working on many different ships. His skills as a sailor helped him rise to high positions. He eventually became a governor and an admiral.

In 1606, Janszoon led a very important voyage. He was the captain of a ship named the Duyfken.

He left a place called Bantam in November of 1606. His mission was to find new places for trade. The ship traveled through many islands. It went to the Banda Islands and the Kai Islands. It also visited the Aru Islands. Finally, the ship reached the coast of western New Guinea. This was a long and difficult journey across the sea.

During this voyage, Janszoon made a historic discovery. He sailed across the Arafura Sea into the Gulf of Carpentaria. On February 26, 1606, he landed on the coast of Australia.

He landed at the Pennefather River near Cape York. This is the first recorded time Europeans landed on the Australian continent. Janszoon did not know he had found a new continent. He thought the land was just a part of New Guinea. He even gave the land a name called Zeeland. He named it after a province in the Netherlands.

The journey was also a very hard and sad time for the crew. There were many fights between the sailors and the local Aboriginal people.

These conflicts led to the deaths of nine crew members. Historians have different ideas about exactly when these deaths happened. Some think it happened at Cape Keerweer. Others think it happened at Yos Sudarso Island in New Guinea. Because of these losses, Janszoon decided to turn back. He returned to Banda by June of 1606.

Even though his diary is lost, Janszoon left us a map.

This chart showed the coast he had seen. It was used to make a map of the Pacific in 1622. This was the first map to show part of Australia. Later in life, Janszoon held many important jobs. He was a member of the Council of the Indies. He also served as the governor of Banda. He likely died in the year 1630. His travels helped change how people saw the world.
